Title of book: The Thorn Bird
Author: Colleen McCullough
The main character in this book is the priest, Ralph de Bricassart and Meggie Cleary. Meggie was loved by Father Ralph, and his struggled with ambition and love is at the heart of the story. The story started at 1915 when Meggie was only four years old. The story happens in New Zealand at first, and then mostly happens in Drogheda, Australia.
The reason why I read this book is because I am eager to improve my reading skills. So, when I went to the self-access room and asked the teacher to nominate some books that suitable for a EAP4 student to do some reading practice. A novel about love might be a good first step approach to the joys of reading for pleasure. Even though this is a tragic ending story.
Moreover, this book’s author is an Australian and the story is partly taken from her own family history, that would be really helpful to understand Australia’s culture and history as a foreigner at here. The severe weather always appeared in Australia from 1920s to 1960s. For instance, storm, or conflagration or drought is not uncommon in this country at that time. Therefore, that is what appeals to me about reading this book, I can learn this country from a novel.
I will recommend this book to my friends who want to improve reading level and curious about Australian’s life in the past. In addition, I will suggest everyone who is hesitating about whether they should begin a relationship with someone whom is impossible to love, and ask them to deal the problem more rational and cautious.
